A scalar has magnitude only; a vector has both magnitude and direction. Add vectors geometrically or resolve them into perpendicular components before calculating.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Resolving a vector

Given: A 10 N force makes 30 degrees with the horizontal.

  1. 1Horizontal component = A cos theta.
  2. 2Vertical component = A sin theta.
  3. 3Use cos 30 degrees = 0.866 and sin 30 degrees = 0.5.

Answer: Components are about 8.66 N horizontally and 5 N vertically.
